Royal Mail Lose 37000 Car Licenses
17 October 2006
The answer to a parliamentary question asked by Mark Pritchard, MP for
The Wrekin, suggests that Royal Mail might lose as many as one in every
hundred vehicle licences posted through it.
The MP asked how many car licences were lost or stolen through the Royal
Mail postage system in 2005-06.
Stephen Ladyman, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, stated
that no information is available on the number of licences stolen in the
post. However, of the 4,087,784 car licences sent by the DVLA, 37,312
were reported as undelivered between 1 January 2005 and 2 October 2006.
This is almost 2000 every month or approximately one in every 100 licences
posted.
James Greenbury, CEO of Secure Mail Services, said:
"This is a shocking level of loss of valuable documents. If the
DVLA used Secure Mail Services for the delivery of vehicle licences both
the Government and UK citizens would benefit from secure delivery and
a considerably lower level of loss."
